Local residents have been left baffled after Reform PRAISED Three Rivers District Council spending £6 million on housing homeless Afghans in the district and ATTACKED Conservatives for opposing the expenditure.
The council has voted twice in the last year to pay a total of £6 million towards housing reserved for homeless Afghans. It was opposed by only Conservative councillors, while every other councillor voted for it. Watch it here.
Reform don’t have councillors, so tried to play both sides. But just before the local elections, to try to hurt the Conservatives, Reform locally endorsed spending the money on Afghans.
Reform’s candidate for Oxhey Hall & Hayling posted on Facebook, “Our government promised to look after them. ... Turning it down would mean another council gets the money.”
Reform have badly misunderstood the scheme, which is expected as it is complicated. It is not for people who worked with the British Army – who have overwhelmingly already been housed.
Furthermore, they claimed the £6 million is paid by the Government. That’s just wrong. It is £6m of Three Rivers’ taxpayers’ money – Government funding for the scheme is on top of that.
Overall, it means millions from Three Rivers subsidising Government refugee resettlement in the district. We simply don’t support that and don’t think they should be settled here. Conservatives are the only local party that put local residents first.
